I have no sympathy, empathy, or interest in and with people who are gullible enough to drop an item and expect anything other than a scam.

Sadly those people will always try to find a new way.

This weekend somebody tried it with my aswell, I stayed and waisted he/her's time and still: "I'm W, I'm far away, plz drop your ..." "You see I drop my ..., so plz drop your ..."
I even went for a snack and in the meantime went AFK, man did I still have a laugh when I returned and he still tried getting me to drop the item I was selling.

Yeah right, there is never a valid reason to drop something unless you don't want it anymore and don't want to make money from it.

I agree, if you fall for something like this you must get a little more common sense, but NO ONE deserves to be scammed. It's that kind of mindset scammers can use to justify their actions. "Well if they're stupid enough to fall for it, I deserve to steal something from them."

ROFL. That's the best answer yet. I love this idea. Waste as much of the scammer's time as possible.

I managed to ruin a few trades for a scammer this weekend. I was in Ascalon and saw a scammer continually spamming "WTS Ectos 7k each!!!!!!!"
After about 20 scrolls of "WTS Ectos 7k each!!!!!" I figured he was scamming or he would have sold them all already at that price.

So, I approached him and said I'd like to buy a few of them. He asked me how many I wanted and I said 10 please. He replied that he only had 8 left so I said I'd take all 8. He opens trades and asks me to please show him 56k first. I did and waited for him to show his ecto. He puts frozen ecto in the window. I cancelled the trade and he just starts whispering to me "huh? what's wrong? Why didn't you accept??" I told him I don't do business with scammers.

He goes back to spamming his "WTS ectos 7k each!!!!!!" message and I follow up each one with "Don't buy ecto from <insert his name here>. He's a scammer selling frozen ecto". I had 2 people who were new players whisper to me asking me what the difference was. They both said they were new and heard that 8k was a good price for ecto and both said they were going to buy from the scammer. Neither had heard of frozen ecto before and didn't realize there was a difference. I explained the difference to them and saved them some hard earned gold.

I'm sick of seeing all the trolls on this site that always respond to threads like this with "well if you're stupid you deserve to be scammed" messages. Nobody deserves to be scammed. There are many new players in the game that may not have bought factions and so don't realize an Assassin can grab an item from far away. They aren't stupid, they just haven't played long enough to know common trading protocols and assassin skill sets. The OP tried to do a good deed and warn others.

Don't knock the OP. It can take a long time to build up the mistrust needed to get by in real life, nevermind an on-line game.

When ever I come across a new player, whether on guru or in-game, I point them to the wiki; too bad there's not one for real life.

Something similar happened to my son - he was devastated - he's still honest and cute

Basically he tried to put out his mini-pet outside and someone started to fight while he was doing it so he rushed and dragged the item instead - so he dropped it and someone grabbed it right away and refused to return it - he wont play much with anyone other than family now

a moron was trying to scam me with the same tactic the other day. However, I immediately thought of a scammer when he wanted to pay for higher price than what I advertised if I went outside to show him how the item (eternal shield) looked. Anyway I went outside with him since I made several successful trades that way.I showed him in the trade window, showed him how it looked when equiped and everything. Then he asked me to drop it to make sure I didn't manipulate the shield's stats (????). I laughed so much even though I didn't know how he could steal my item when far away with that shadow step trick.Anyway I decided to play with him a bit with all stupid questions like why?, oh really? how come? wow!,.... he even tried to give me lengthy explanation. At the end I just say "F*ck off scammer" and laughed so much.

Another time when a guy was trying to sell cheap Ectos. it was very very cheap (6K each) that made me curious to find out why. He showed me 3 Mursaat tokens (or something looks similar to ectos but darker). I laughed and offered him 18g instead of 18K and you know what? he clicked ACCEPT! I laughed so much that I forgot to click ACCEPT. Otherwise he would be scammed by actually tring to scam someone.

Anyway, I think if we know for certain the person is trying to scam, we should try to frustrate him by wasting his time and effort. I believe if this happens so frequently to scammers, they will be less motivated to scam again.
